TOMCAT Encourages Truss Inspection Records to be updated
As we quickly approach the spring/summer entertainment season, it is important to make sure your truss inspection records are updated. Depending on how the truss is used, ANSI E1.2-2006 calls for truss to be formally inspected at least once a year.Copies of ANSI E1.2 can be purchased at http://www.estafoundation.org/pubs.htm. All proceeds from the sale of PLASA Technical Standards go to support “Behind the Scenes” which provides help to industry members in need.
During this inspection the truss should be pulled out of inventory, thoroughly inspected, and those records kept with the owner of the truss. This type of inspection is mainly a visual inspection, to ensure there is not damage to any of the truss members.
We find most truss damage is done during transportation and by C-clamps on lighting fixtures. Damage to diagonals, horizontals and verticals can normally be replaced and the truss can be returned to normal service. Any damage to main chords will require truss replacement. It is important to verify with the manufacturer of your truss to know what the guidelines are for inspection.
TOMCAT can assist in your truss inspection needs. This help can range from examples of truss inspection documents, guidelines for reviewing damage, or TOMCAT can perform the inspection. Any truss that needs to be replaced can be recycled by TOMCAT for a credit towards a new truss purchase, regardless of the original manufacturer.
